About Before You Settle

Who I Am

I'm Philip Ludington. I'm not a lawyer. I'm an investigative researcher who digs through court records, government reports, whistleblower testimony, and public financial data to expose how the insurance industry actually operates.

Think of Before You Settle as consumer investigative journalism. I bring the facts, the sources, and the receipts. Every claim I make is sourced, and every source is linked.

Why This Channel Exists

The U.S. insurance industry is worth over $1.4 trillion. In 2024, the property and casualty sector alone posted $169 billion in profit — a 90% increase from 2023. Yet nearly 1 in 5 in-network claims are denied, and only 0.2% of those denials are ever appealed.

The system depends on you not knowing how it works. This channel exists to change that.

Methodology

Every investigation follows the same standard:

  • Primary sources only: Government reports, court filings, academic research, and industry data. No anonymous tips without corroboration. No speculation presented as fact.
  • Full source attribution: Every claim links to its source. Sources are categorized by type (government report, court filing, news investigation, etc.) and listed on every investigation page.
  • Clear separation: Facts are presented as facts. Analysis is clearly labeled as analysis. Opinions are identified as opinions. Legal information is never presented as legal advice.
  • Corrections: If we get something wrong, we correct it publicly and promptly. Corrections are noted on the relevant investigation page.

Source Standards

We prioritize sources in this order:

  1. Government data: Federal Insurance Office reports, NAIC data, HHS releases, DOJ filings
  2. Court filings: Class action complaints, judicial opinions, settlement agreements
  3. Academic research: Published studies, peer-reviewed analysis, law review articles
  4. Investigative journalism: ProPublica, KFF, STAT News, and other investigative outlets
  5. Industry data: Insurance company financial reports, SEC filings, trade publications
  6. Whistleblower testimony: Named, on-record statements from former industry insiders
